We're Expanding! Would You Like To Join The Team?

We're glad to be able to you invite you to consider getting more involved in Sussex Cohousing though joining our small ‘development group’.

Development Group

In short, the development group is made up of people actively and regularly involved in making the project happen: people willing to invest time, energy and some money (to help cover basic core costs) to realise the community.

The benefits of becoming a member of the development group are as follows:

  • gives you an active part in creating this community and participation in development processes;

  • involves you in decision making processes;

  • may give you priority when applying to live in the community (although there are no guarantees of securing a dwelling);

  • may entitle you to a level (to be agreed) of sweat equity (an increase in the value of a member's investment in return for the work they have put in) when the project is complete;

  • means you're invited to our social gatherings, trips, workshops and events;

  • enables you to experience and be part of the cohousing movement as part of a supportive, passionate team.

There are currently 6 development group members (us above!). As a 6 we collectively make up a General Circle which oversees the overarching policy and directional decisions of the project. All 6 current members are also paired up in additional ‘task’ or ‘operational’ circles responsible for undertaking the more practical aspects of getting things done. These task circles have the following focuses:

  • Community Circle

  • Site and Design Circle

  • Legal and Finance Circle

We would like to increase the number of development group members to approximately 10-12 over the winter period. We would like to move the project forward by welcoming new faces, skills, energy and perspectives, without undermining the stability and strong communication of the group by expanding too much, too fast. For these reasons, new development group members will initially only be required to join one of the above task circles (ideally 2 new people per task circle above). There will then be the possibility of joining the General Circle in the future through our internal election process. This we hope will enable new people to get involved without hampering the stability at the heart of what is a complex (and fascinating) ongoing project.
